Gatekeepers

26 But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.27 They would spend the night stationed around the house of God,because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.....I Chronicles 9:26-27....."Any unauthorized person who approaches you must be killed. Stay right beside the king at all times." 2 Kings 11:8b

I just finished a short article saying that a recent Barna report shows that about 1/3 of the professing evangelical church does not have the Bible, the Word of God, as the foundation of their world view. That they believe there is "other truth" that carries as much weight as it. His Word is seen by many as one of a number competing philosophies. There is truth in it, but it is not the final Truth. Jesus said He was the "Way, the Truth, and the Light, no one comes to the Father but by Me." Many within the "church" have reduced Him to being one of many ways, many truths, and many lights. How could this be?

The Scripture from I Chronicles would seem an obscure one. How much attention does anyone pay to the Old Testament these days any way? Yet the things that the Lord set in place concerning worship and the care of His Holy Temple can not be overlooked today. The gatekeepers, all of the tribe of Levi, all of the chosen priesthood, had a sacred responsibility before God to care for and protect His Temple. With their very lives if need be. Levites alone fulfilled the role of the priesthood in the OT. With the coming of Christ, all who receive Him are brought into His "royal priesthood." Therefore, all who enter into that priesthood enter into a sacred trust of being gatekeepers not only of the Body of Christ, but of the temple that is our heart, and His dwelling place. From the pastor in the pulpit, to the believer sitting in the last row of the church, we are all gatekeepers, entrusted with a sacred responsibility. How have we been carrying out that responsibility? Has His trust been misplaced?

We are living in a day when the Church is being bombarded by, and in many cases, infiltrated by, lies disguised as truth. Those called pastors and shepherds also have the role of being gatekeepers for their fellowship, protecting those within from the destruction that results from believing these lies. If the pastor doubts the validity of His Word and Truth, than may God help those entrusted to their care. They really are sheep without a shepherd, no matter what his or her title may be. His Truth is a treasure entrusted to our care. How have we been watching over it? Are we gatekeepers asleep at the gate, or are we awake, alert, even in the deepest hours of the night? How have we guarded what He has trusted us with? Or, has He lost His trust in us?

Yet the responsibility does not stop with the shepherd, for we are to shepherd our own hearts as well. The Scripture from 2 Kings 11, has to do with the overthrow of Athalia, who had stolen the throne after the death of her son Ahaziah. She murdered all the royal family, but one, her grandson Joash was saved and kept in the Lord's Temple. While still a boy, the leading priests and soldiers rebelled, overthrew Athalia, and made Joash king. In the fighting, warriors were assigned to protect Joash, to stay near him, and kill any "unauthorized" person who sought to come near him. In this I see a teaching for all of us concerning our hearts. There are countless "unauthorized" thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and so on that seek to gain entry into our hearts. Our only chance of overcoming them is to stay near, stay in the King, Christ. We have to be gatekeepers of our own hearts. How are we faring in that role? What is getting in? What have we been keeping out? Are we living in Him through all of it?

The need of the hour, of every hour, is for gatekeepers. The enemy's darkness has unleashed a full frontal assault on His Light. He has entrusted His gatekeepers to overcome it all, and in Him, we will. Pastor or congregant, we have been entrusted. We are His royal priesthood. Gatekeepers, each given our post and the key to the gate. Does He find us still standing that post, obedient, faithful.......or, have we left the gate open?

Blessings,
Pastor O
